This not only lets you display a set of scripts in one Geeklet, but lets you change your GeekTool desktop display without having to change the script within the GeekTool preference pane. You comment out the scripts you don't want to run. The main.bash script is just one script that runs all the other scripts.

In the inspector window change from the Input Parameters tab to the Settings tab.

To do this you will need to select the Audio Input patch and click on the Patch Inspector button in Quartz’s toolbar. You should now notice the bars in the viewer begin moving, this is because the Audio Input patch by default takes an input from your internal microphone and processes it, we however want to have the input device to be our Soundflower device. With the Audio Input patch now in the viewer drag the button from the Spectrum output (you’ll see a yellow “string” begin drawn) and connect it to the Audio Spectrum (Required) patch already in the viewer. If you do not see the patch library click on the patch library button in the top left of the viewer and locate the Audio Input patch and drag it into the patch viewer. To utilizer the Soundflower audio device we first need to add an Audio Input patch. This however is why we downloaded Soundflower and configured the output device for our system in Audio MIDI Setup. This is a big issue as I usually have iTunes in fullscreen and don’t like keeping it open to the visualizer. This is because iTunes does not send the stream of audio data to quartz unless a visualizer is open and is in the same desktop space as the quartz file running. This is the screen you should see, if you have iTunes playing music you’ll notice none of the bars are moving in the preview window. After you register and log in click on the Download Tools link then the Additional Tools link.

To download Quartz Composer you will first need to register for Apple Developer, you won’t be publishing anything so just go ahead and use the free program. If you want to use a similar background to the one I used just go ahead and generate you image using the link I posted and slap it on your background.

At the same time you should download Soundflower, it is a simple install and is required for this to work. Download all necessary filesįirst things first download NerdTool and GeekTool, I prefer working with GeekTool however from my understanding NerdTool is the only program that allows quartz files to be played on the desktop. I used this tool to generate my background image.Fully iTunes Geeklet for the information text, I only used the Music Data geeklet however you can also use the stars geeklet if you so desire.

I will note however that we will be using a tool called Soundflower to access the stream of audio data for the quartz composition, because of this the volume button on your mac will not work. It works for any sound coming through your computer, for example iTunes works as does youtube videos and videogames. The main goal of this project was to create a desktop that had eq bars that responded to my computer’s audio output.

This should be fairly accessible to all skill levels, if you have any questions head onto Reddit’s GeekTool page and find my post, I am more than happy to answer anything and everything I can! What Does This Do? Next is a brief tutorial on how to go ahead and make your own version of this desktop.
